Specific Learning Disability (Specific Learning Difficulty) is a neurodevelopmental condition diagnosed in individuals who fall significantly behind their peers in reading, writing, and/or mathematics despite having normal or above-normal intelligence levels. The most common form, dyslexia, is known as a reading difficulty. As Önce Special Education, we offer comprehensive and individualized special education programs for children diagnosed with specific learning difficulties at our center in Pendik, Istanbul.
Specific learning difficulty should not be confused with a child's laziness or lack of motivation. Although these children make a lot of effort, they experience difficulties in reading speed, reading comprehension, spelling accuracy, or mathematical processing skills. With early diagnosis and appropriate intervention, it is possible to significantly increase the academic success of these children. Together with families applying to our center from Pendik and surrounding districts, we analyze each child's learning profile in detail and develop strategies that support learning by using their strengths.
At our center, methods with internationally proven effectiveness, such as the Orton-Gillingham approach, multi-sensory learning techniques, and cognitive strategy training, are applied. An individualized education program (IEP) is prepared for each child, and academic goals are determined according to the child's developmental level and learning style. How Does It Work?
A comprehensive psycho-educational evaluation is conducted to determine the child's cognitive profile, academic level, and learning style.
Based on the evaluation results, an individualized education program (IEP) is prepared, and short-, medium-, and long-term goals are set.
Reading and writing skills are systematically worked on using multi-sensory teaching methods (visual, auditory, tactile, kinesthetic).
Metacognitive skills through which the child can manage their own learning are developed with cognitive strategy training.
School cooperation is established, and the teacher is guided on adaptations and accommodations to be applied in the classroom environment.

Is specific learning difficulty intellectual disability?
Absolutely not. Specific learning difficulty is seen in individuals with normal or above-normal intelligence levels. The problem is not intelligence, but the way the brain processes information. These children are individuals who learn differently, and they can be very successful with appropriate education methods. Many famous figures like Einstein and Leonardo da Vinci are known to have experienced dyslexia.
Can dyslexia be treated?
Dyslexia is not a disease to be "treated" but a condition to be managed. With appropriate special education and strategy teaching, children's reading and writing skills can be significantly improved. My child has an SLD diagnosis, what kind of rights do they have at school?
Students diagnosed with SLD can benefit from various arrangements like an individualized education program (IEP), additional time, and the right to oral exams under the Ministry of National Education regulations. These rights become official with a Counseling and Research Center (RAM) report. We guide families through the diagnosis process and legal rights at our Pendik center.
